In Japan the Kei Class of vehicles must adhere to strict regulations correlating to their overall physical dimensions as well as their engine displacement and power output. Current regualations state that to qualify as a Kei a vehicle must not exceed the exterior dimensions of 3.4mx1.48mx2m or 11.2ftx4.9ftx6.6ft in Imperial Units (all measurements are reported in the format LengthxWidthxHeight) and not have and engine displacing more than 660cc and generating more than 63HP. Although many newer Kei models are deliberately detuned to meet the 63HP limit and can be easily tuned for more performace.
In 1988 Japanese Domestic Market cars were limited by Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association to a maximum top speed of 180km/h (111.8 mph) and a maximum power output of 276HP. However the horsepower restriction was removed in 2004. Many models were detuned to conform to regulations, however are easily capable of acheiving 500+hp and vastly increased top speed with a simple retune.
Yes, Japanese Domestic Market Vehicles are eligible for import to the United States and Canada however there are certain rules and guidelines which are described in detail in our Import page.
In Japan, each vehicle has to go through the rigorous "Shaken" which is a motor vehicle inspection which is mandatory every 2 years. With the high cost of the "Shaken" and costs associated with keeping an older car on the road in Japan, many Japanese people prefer to trade up to the latest model brand new car instead of keeping their old one. Thus leading to a vast amount of cars that have seen very little use and are in excellent condition available for export.
Importing a JDM vehicle is the same as importing any other vehicle that wasn't originally sold in that respective country. Check with your repective county's department of transportation or transportation ministry for detailed rules and regulations.
Buying a Japanese Domestic Market vehicle gives more options as to add-ons and trim levels as well as more vehicle choices because many vehicles were only exported in the base trim level, and some models were not exported at all. Famous examples such as the Nissan Skyline GTR, Nissan Silvia S15 and Toyota Century were of many models only availble for purchase in Japan. Used Japanese Domestic Market vehicles are an excellet choice to buy because of the meticulous maintainence and care that they have recived their entire life due to the stringent "Shaken" which causes cars to be decomissioned long before their true end of life. A vehicle that has been decomissioned in Japan may have decades more life left in it, but is just not economically viable to keep on the roads due to the cost of "Shaken" and low prices of new vehicles.
